The death toll has risen to 36 people after the collapse of a roadway on a highway in the southern Chinese province of Guangdong , DPA quoted BTA as saying, citing data published by the state-run Xinhua news agency.
The agency reported that three more cars were found that fell victim to the collapse.
19 deaths were reported earlier.
The collapse of an 18-meter section of road near Meizhou City on the Meizhou-Dabu Expressway occurred after several days of heavy rain in the area.
Witnesses told local media that they heard a loud noise and saw a hole several meters wide open behind them after they passed the section of road that was about to collapse. The cause of the incident is under investigation.
Heavy rainfall is not uncommon in Guangdong province, but lately it has been unusually heavy. Water levels in the Pearl River Delta region have risen dangerously. Flooding was also reported in cities and villages in the northern and southern parts of Guangzhou.
